Photo‐oxidation of poly(diethylene glycol terephthalate)

The photo-oxidation of poly(diethylene glycol terephthalate) (PDEGT) under accelerated aging conditions has been investigated. A weatherometer was used to expose samples simulated sunlight air, replicating outdoor exposure. Irradiations were also performed air using UV lamps wavelengths centred on 302 and 365 nm. After exposure, the extent degradation determined attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse spectroscopy UV–visible spectroscopy. Results show that in general PDEGT degrades a greater than closely-related polymer poly(ethylene due susceptibility ether linkage. Although diethylene sequences are not themselves photoactive over this wavelength range acting as photochemical weak links they do serve additional sites for secondary free radical chemistry.

The asymmetric unit of the title salt, 2C(2)H(8)NO(+)·C(8)H(4)O(4) (2-), comprises one crystallographically independent 2-hy-droxy-ethanaminium cation and one half terephthalate anion.
